Getting Started at the Leonardi Institute

Regardless of which of our three programs you choose, we begin with a comprehensive evaluation. For most people, this will be our MEDSTART (MEDical STatus And Risk Targeting) (described below).

MEDSTART

Blood is drawn in your home city at a local Labcorp draw station, or we can arrange for a phlebotomist to come to your home or office for an additional charge. You will also fill out our medical history questionnaire and email it back to us. We therefore, have all the information we need prior to your visit so we’re able to provide your complete assessment on the day of your visit. Visits may be scheduled as early as two weeks from the day of your blood draw. This evaluation requires only one visit to our clinic in Denver, Colorado for a single day. Thereafter, follow-up visits may be done using blood tests done locally in your home city with visits accomplished by telephone.

Blood testing: over 50 tests of metabolic function including levels of vital hormones and multiple measures of disease risk, many of which are not normally done in annual exams. A complete list of blood tests for the MEDSTART may be found here.

On the day of your visit you’ll also undergo several diagnostic tests at our facility.

Physical Examination by your chosen practitioner.

DXA scan: GE Lunar fan beam X-ray to determine bone density of both hips and spine as well as total body fat percentage.

Carotid Artery Ultrasound: This painless and non-invasive (ultrasound is the technology used to image the fetus during pregnancy) test images the carotid artery in your neck, which carries blood to your brain.

We look for obstructing plaque and also measure the intima-media thickness (IMT). This is the thickness of the fatty streak that develops from cholesterol deposits in the artery wall and precedes the development of plaques. The IMT correlates with how fast you’re accumulating cholesterol and from this we can estimate your current risk of a cardiovascular event such as a stroke or heart attack. By following this test going forward we’ve been able to demonstrate plaque reversal in many patients.

Cogstate: A computerized electronically metered test of memory/learning, reaction time, brain processing speed and attention. This is validated for research purposes and is designed to determine risk of future dementia by its ability to diagnose Mild Cognitive Impairment or pre-Alzheimer’s disease up to ten years before the dementia might otherwise be apparent. The Cogstate is not at all intimidating and takes only about twenty minutes.

King-Devick Test: This is a baseline test of your brain’s pathways that relate to saccadic eye movements. Saccades are very quick, simultaneous movements of both eyes between different points of fixation. These eye movements involve multiple neural conduction pathways throughout the brain and are affected by diverse types of brain illness or injury. We can use the King-Devick Test to assess your baseline level of function, but it is even better to assess changes in function (better or worse) as brain function improves or declines.

REE (resting energy expenditure): This is a measure of your Basal Metabolic Rate by Indirect Calorimetry. It tells us how many calories you would burn in 24 hours if you did nothing but sit in a chair. We do not count calories for weight loss. Instead, this is a tool that correlates with your body size, lean mass and fitness level.

Brief strength and flexibility testing to establish your baseline.

A casual, unrushed education session one-on-one with your practitioner to describe the processes by which we age and how they relate to our lifestyle and hormone levels. Couples will attend this together. In this session, you’ll learn much about enhancing vitality and preventing disease that you just can’t get elsewhere. You may stop for comments or questions at any time. This typically takes about an hour.

Test Review and Explanation

In this segment, also one-on-one, your practitioner will

When finished you will have a personal binder with all test results, the normal range, our optimal range, and a section of educational materials for healthy lifestyle improvements.

After your session, your practitioner will compile a detailed report highlighting each one of your issues for which he or she recommends improvement and instructions on how to implement that improvement.

Cost: The cost of a MEDSTART™ with Dr. Leonardi is $2,695. With Jennifer Wood, Nurse Practitioner it is $1,695. The cost of your ongoing comprehensive program ranges from about $400 to $700 per month and includes unlimited contact with your board-certified physician or Nurse Practitioner, your nutritional supplements and hormones and follow-up blood testing. The cost range is related to the practitioner you choose and the specific supplements you require as these are customized for the individual. The Nurse Practitioner program averages about $100 per month less than the M.D. program. Some of these fees may be reimbursed back to you by your insurance company, depending on their policies. While we don’t accept insurance, we will provide you with a coded receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

There are two exceptions to the basic MEDSTART:

  1. For type I diabetics, additional testing and education are added to arrive at what we call a DIABETESTART (DIABETES STatus And Risk Targeting) (described below).

  2. And for those experiencing cognitive impairment, additional testing and education are added to arrive at a BRAINSTART (BRAIN STatus And Risk Targeting) (described below).

DIABETESTART (Type I Diabetes Evaluation)

This evaluation includes everything in a MEDSTART (please see description above). It also includes an additional blood test called C-peptide that determines if you’re able to produce any amount of insulin. There is also a good deal of education and discussion about insulin use, possible other medications and innovative ways to control blood sugar with less insulin.

Cost: The cost of a DIABETESTART™ with Dr. Leonardi is $2,995 for those who are on insulin. With Jennifer Wood, Nurse Practitioner it is $1,995. The Nurse Practitioner program averages about $100 per month less than the M.D. program. Some of these fees may be reimbursed back to you by your insurance company (but not Medicare), depending on their policies. While we don’t accept insurance, we will provide you with a coded receipt that you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

The above evaluation requires only one visit to our clinic in Denver, Colorado for a single day. Thereafter, follow-up visits may be done using blood tests done locally in your home city with visits accomplished by telephone.

BRAINSTART

Reserved for patients who already experience cognitive impairment, the BRAINSTART includes everything in a MEDSTART (please see description above) as well as additional cognitive testing to better assess the level of cognitive impairment as well as additional blood tests to better assess the cause(s) of cognitive problems. The treatment protocol that is outlined is more comprehensively focused on the lifestyle changes you can make and nutritional supplements available to implement brain protection to slow, arrest or possibly even reverse your cognitive deficit.

Cost: The cost of a BRAINSTART™ with Dr. Leonardi is $2,995. With Jennifer Wood, Nurse Practitioner it is $1,995. Ongoing Program

Whichever of the three comprehensive evaluations you choose, at the end of the session your practitioner will invite you to enroll in an ongoing turn-key program wherein he or she will arrange for follow-up blood testing in 5 weeks and thereafter, about every 4 months. Blood may be drawn at your local Labcorp draw station or we can arrange for a phlebotomist to come to your home or office for an additional charge. You’ll be scheduled for a visit after each blood test to review the results with your practitioner by telephone or if you prefer, in person. Phone visits work exceptionally well because test results are sent to you on a flow sheet showing not only your current results but all previous ones so you can compare progress at a glance. Your practitioner’s comments will be on the flow sheet as well. At your visit, there will be a discussion of how you’re feeling, how well you’re able to follow the nutrition and exercise recommendations and keep up with the program elements (nutritional supplements and hormones).

Again, each test done will be reviewed along with recommendations to improve the results if needed. Your practitioner’s office notes will be emailed to you after that visit along with an updated hormone and supplement schedule to include all the adjustments that were made. While on a Leonardi Institute program you have unlimited contact with your practitioner so you’re welcome to make a telephone or in-person appointment whenever you have a question or concern about your vitality and longevity program. You may also communicate with your practitioner by email if you prefer. Also included is an optional annual physical examination with your practitioner.
